SAVANNAH COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN
A Mixture of Southern Charm and High Tech

Puppet Gumbo will be held on the campus of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), which is the largest art college in the country. SCAD embraces all of the finest modern technology, but it does so from beautiful buildings that shine with the charm of the south. To do that, the college bought many old buildings and restored them to their historic greatness.

A relaxing stroll down the street amidst hanging moss covered trees is all it takes to make you forget all about the sleep deprivation that a puppet festival can bring.

While some colleges simply rent out dorms and meeting space to various organizations to supplement summer income, SCAD is actually excited to have us there. They recognize the art of puppetry and want to share in the celebration with us.

Savannah is centrally located within our southeast region, and for those who wish to attend from other parts of the world, Savannah is only a ten minute car ride from all 50 states (might take slightly longer for Canadians and those coming from Australia).

HOW TO GET HERE:

From the north of south, take I-95 to the exit for I-16 to Savannah. It ends downtown on Montgomery Street. Go to the first light (stay in the left lane) which is Liberty Street and take a left.  Cross Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd (it's only one block away) and go one more block to W. Boundary.  You will see the dorms immediately on the left (looks like a gated community of townhouses).  Turn left and the entrance to the dorm.  Parking is the next right.  Registration is in the building that you see when you first look to the left on W. Boundary when you are on Liberty St.

From northern Georgia, take I-16 as shown above.

From US 17, come over the Savannah River Bridge and take the first right on W. Boundary. Go one block and you will see the dorms on the right. If you miss W. Boundary and go to MLK, Jr Blvd, take a right one block to Liberty, another right onto Liberty, and one block to W. Boundary. The dorms are on the left on the corner of Liberty and W. Boundary.

And While You Are Here...
There is so much to see in Savannah. Telfair Museum of Art /Jepson Center; Roundhouse Railroad Museum; Historic Homes: Davenport House, JulietteGordon Low House, Andrew Low House, Green-Meldrim House, Owens-Thomas House, etc.; Historic Churches: Cathedral of St John, Christ Church, Lutheran Church of the Ascension, First African Church, Independent Presbyterian, Temple Mickve Israel, First Baptist Church, Wesley Monumental, etc. Cemeteries like Bonaventure and Colonial Park; art galleries and shops sprinkled throughout the downtown; and Fort Pulaski (on the way to the beach) which still has cannonballs in its walls... There are ghost tours, walking tours, pub crawls, nature tours, etc.; Tybee Island is Savannah's beach - lots to do there. And many wonderful restaurants and haunts downtown. You can't help but love it! I'd suggest also looking at the Savannah web site - they may have listings for any cultural events happening like plays or concerts.

Climate June... usually very warm... and can be rainy. Although we are still in a drought, Savannah is only slightly behind in annual rainfall. Even though we have no bugs, we still definitely suggest bugspray (like Cutter, Claubo or that Avon Skin So Soft that the gnats hate)...just in case. Light weight clothing and you're set. Tybee Island (Savannah's beach) is about 13 miles east of the city - great place to be in the late spring for walking the beach or a cooling swim (bring sunscreen).

Join us from June 12-15, 2008 in Beautiful Historic Savannah, GA!
