your fingers and play with your mind. We will start each morning with movement and voice.
(Stretching and singing!) and then settle down to some serious hands on, brains engaged
creative collaboration. Over the course of the week the class members will write a
script and build puppets preparing a performance for the end of the week. Sooooo if you're

Basic Bunraku
(Mon through Wed)
Consider the humble plastic bag...indeed, consider a small mountain of
them. With the help of masking tape, rubber bands, and imagination, they can be
turned into lightweight, superbly manipulable pppets of almost any size, shape, and kind.
With the addition of costuming, they can become elegant, low or no cost,
performance puppets. This workshop invites you to try your hand at building and
bringing them to life.This workshop
requires pre-registration and is limited to 20 participants. Bring a big mound of
platic grocery bags, newspaper, and bread bags.

Finding a Voice
"How do you do all those voices?" is a question that comes up
over and over again. Puppeteer Steve Abrams has developed a voice
workshop that leads participants step by step, from the very easy animal sounds, to
cartoon voices, to the creation of a character voice for a puppets. Visual artists who are
uncomfortable with acting, teachers trying puppetry for the first time, and children all
find this fun filled session very helpful. Puppeteers that offer workshops in schools will
find this session provides a useful model. Participants will leave with at least a
dozen voices for puppet shows or story telling. You will be amazed at your own acting
skill!

Business is NOT a
Four Letter Word
There may be no business like show business, but the business of show
business is another matter. I have found that there are three basic parts to show
business: prepare, promote, and perform. If you apply the same methodology to the business
aspects as to the show, the business things will flow along quite nicely. The
trouble is that many performers are convinced that they are "right-brain" people
and canıt do the business stuff. Bull-ony! Itıs simple!

40 may observe, space permitting

The Hand Puppet and
the Performer
Over one three-hour workshop session, I propose to offer an entry point for developing
character relationship between the performer and the hand puppet in solo performance.
Starting with a non-verbal language we would explore
this relationship through the dynamics of the victim/victimizer, the innocent/guilty, the
blind/seeing, the fearful/fearless. This technique would lead artists towards an
incorporation of contemporary performance practices and traditional hand puppet
manipulation. This workshop runs
through the 10:15-11:45 session as well. It is limited to 12 participants, but
others may observe.

Puppets in Humor
For years I have collected cartoons and comic strips depicting puppets,
vent dummies, and even robots. I have also saved clippings in which politicians are
described as puppets. I found a few advertisements featuring puppets as well.
It's amazing how many artists and writers have utilized the metaphor of the puppet as a
person's alter ego, able to say what the person can't, a substitute friend, or an
individual under the control of others. I want to share my collection and ask others to
bring along their own. We can have a lot of fun over a fascinating byproduct of our art.
